file name in footer

When I attempt to put the file path in my footer (auto text) auto text shows
up as dull gray (giving no options) rather than black, i.e. it is not an
option. Does anyone know how to turn this option on? In an attempt to fix it.
I have reformatted my disc and reloaded word but to no avail.
