View Full Version : Footnotes - Keyboard Shortcut
I'd like to use a keyboard shortcut for inserting a footnote. Can
somebody please tell me the combination?
PS: Is it possible to have word automatically insert a footnote
reference number, via find/replace? To replace every occurrence of **
with a separate, continuously numbered, footnote reference?
Thanks.

I don't know about the second question, but, for the first, use Ctrl+Alt+F.
This will insert a footnote using your current settings, so you may want to
use Insert | Footnote for the first one to make sure that the settings are
correct.

Hi <*((((><{
You can change custom footnotes into auto-numbered footnotes with a macro:
http://www.google.com/groups?threadm=OSNYR%24UVDHA.2104%40TK2MSFTNGP10.p hx.gbl&rnum=1
Once you've done that, you can choose the numbering scheme in the footnote dialog.
Likely, it'll already be the default 1, 2, 3 style.

But the document doesn't have any Word footnotes. It's scanned,
and the * indicates a footnote. I want to do a find/replace and
insert a footnote reference in lieu of the *.
Is that possible?

There's no simple way to do that, probably.
Can you tell where the footnote texts end (say, a manual page break inserted by the OCR software)?
You might be able to write a macro then, something like:
-- Search for the next asterisk (footnote reference in the text) and set a bookmark there,
-- Search down for the next asterisk (footnote reference at the end of the page) and select the footnote text,
-- Cut it to the clipboard,
-- Go back to the bookmark,
-- Insert a "real" footnote, and paste the footnote text.
-- Wash, rinse and repeat until you don't find any more asterisks.

Klaus

And hope you don't have more than one footnote on the same page (or step
2 will not find the corresponding text ...?).
