As Stefan points out, you'll probably need to use TC fields. The problem
arises with the combination of numbered paragraphs and run-in sideheads. You
can apply a heading style to a portion of a paragraph (see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RunInSidehead.htm), but then you often
lose the numbering. Getting the numbering in a TC field is not a snap,
either, though. Sometimes the simplest approach is to apply the appropriate
numbering to the TOC styles themselves; see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm for more on this.

My question is "how to mark text for entry into a table of contents"?

I have a document that has numbered paragraphs which include run-on
headings.
I need to mark the headings (including their number in the numbering
scheme)
for identification in my table of contents. For example, Section 1.
Definitions (I need the automatic section number and the heading to be
included in the TOC); my next level is (A) Landlord's Name (again, I
need
the automatic number and the heading to be included in the TOC); and
so
on.
My problem is that paragraph (A) is really the third level in the
scheme
(the
second level is 1.1 with a heading name) but that doesn't come into
play
until Section 2, which has a title and then paragraph 2.1 which also
has a
title. In other sections, paragraph (A) does not have a heading and
so I
don't need to include because it is just a numbered paragraph. Also,
the
exhibits at the end of the document need to be included with their
page
numbers in the TOC so I need to mark them as well.
