Default 2 columns are set up when opening a new document, why?

It's a total mystery how things like this happens, but, when they do,
there's little recourse but to modify Normal.dot. Although that can be done
"remotely" for some things (Font, styles, Page Setup), for columns you have
to actually open Normal.dot and make the change. For instructions, see

When I open a new word document, 2 columns are already set up as some sort

of
default. I can get rid of the two columns by using the formatting menu,

but
this is a real pain doing it every time. I must have done something to set

it
up this way, but it must have been by accident, because I can't find any

way
of changing this default. Any ideas?
