Default Update prompt at open and close

Word 2003. No macros, just the fields. They are inserted into a document, vs.
a template. I open the original document , answer the prompts, and do a SAVE
AS to a new document. In this way I preserve the original prompt responses,
which serve as a tickler for how prompt responses should be formatted. The
new document is what I want to stop asking for updates when I close it and
when I subsequently re-open it.

Hi ?B?a2F5YWtlcg==?=,

My Word document, with 12 ASK/REF fields, prompts me to update fields when
the document is opened and closed. How do I prevent the update prompt when
closing the document, without losing the option to update it the next time
the document gets opened? I get tired of pounding the ESC key before I can
close it!

Which version of Word is involved?

Normally, an ASK field will not update automatically; only Fillin fields
exhibit this behavior. If the ASK field is being updated, then there's likely
some code somewhere forcing the field updates. Do you have macros in this
document, or in your Normal.dot or some other template?
