What will work is to make sure that the Header Styles is not set to
Automatically Update. Then in the new section's header, change the
paragraph

I have a document with a floating picture in the header. The position

relative to the margin.
I need a second section with smaller margins and no header. So what I
do is:
- go to the end of the document
- insert a section break “next page”
- remove the link between the section 1 and section 2 header
- delete the section 2 header
- reduce the margins of section 2
and, very unexpectedly to me, the picture in the header of section 1
moves to the left. It moves along with the margins of section 2, as if
its position is linked to the margins of section 2.

How is this possible? Did I do something wrong?

I am sorry, but I still don't get it.
The picture is in the section 1 header. If I change the margins in
section 1, the picture stays where it is, it doesn't move.
If I change the margins in section 2, the picture in the section 1
header shifts to the left.
I personally don't think this is a style issue. It looks like the
picture in the section 1 header is anchored to the section 2 margins.

You suggest changing the picture placement from ‘relative to margin’
to ‘relative to page’.
I’d rather not change something in the first section. The real
document is a bit more complicated than I’ve sketched here, and I’d
rather not fiddle with the first section. But, I guess I have no
choice. I really think this is a bug in Word.

I tried your suggestion and it did work. When the picture position is
specified ‘relative to page’, it behaves normal. I tried changing it
back to ‘relative to margin’ and hoped that things would miraculously
be functioning again, but they didn’t.

Obviously, the ‘relative to margin’ setting does not work good with a
picture or textbox in the heading and multiple sections.

Is there a place where you can you report bugs like this? Is it
usefull to do this?
