Default Positioning character vertically in line

There is also a Compatibility Option "Don't add extra space for
raised/lowered characters."

Loweing the text won't push the line down if you set the line spacing of
the paragraph to an exact amount.

Other than using a text box, is there a way to position the asterisk (*)
and
caret (^) so they fall closer to the base of the line being typed. I
tried
using Font Character Spacing Position Lowered but that pushes the
next
line down by the same number or points the character is lowered. Some
documents require a row of asterisks or carets inserted in line with the
rest
of the text.
