Chris Jones worked it out himself!!! (Thanks to the help of some other
disguised questions.

The answer is....

On the View tab of Tools | Options, make sure that "Picture placeholders" is
not checked.

I did this and all was back to normal

/outline independently, I still can't get to see the graphics until I use the
Print Review icon. Then I see everything perfectly. Obviously tho I can't
