Default recovering original document

If you did not save it or have access to it, there is no way of going back
to it from the letters that were created by merging it with a datasource.

I have a document which has been merged with a dataset to produce a set of
letters. The original document has/d some conditional statements which
serve/d to switch paragraphs (inclusion or not) into the final letter.

I'm trying to recover the original doucment with the conditionals and etc,
prior to any merging (currently I can only recover the text/logic of the
switching by running through a dataset to see the totality of possible
outputs - which is instructive but does not permit me to edit the
original!).

Anyone know how to recover the original pre-merge document?
