Default i accidentially engaged a keystroke single hit delay feature. how

That's not a Word feature, it's one of the Windows accessibility
options (the one called Filter Keys).

If you have Windows XP, go to Start menu Control Panel
Accessibility Options and turn off Filter Keys. Also click the
Settings button and disable the shortcut.

If you have Vista, go to Start menu Control Panel Ease of Access
Center "Make it easier to focus on tasks" to get to a similar
dialog.
