You should be able to enter text in a read only file - what you cannot do
with such files is save them with the same name!
My guess is that the document does not have focus - perhaps because of the
Norton AV Office plug-in, which should be turned off.

Make sure they are not "Read Only" files! Right click on the icon and
then "Properties" where you can check if the said box is ticked. B
