Default word saved a file as encoded and now I can't open it

The ~$lename.doc file is not your document; it's the owner file. See

I created and saved a word file in MS Word, used it several times with no
problem but now whn I try to open it it shows as squiggly line$(and then

part
of the name) and then asks me to select the encoding that makes the file
readable. I have tried all of the option it gives me but it still shows

as a
jumble of symbols.. How can I get my file back?
