I gather this is a mail merge main document. You need the field:
{ IF { MERGEFIELD nick_name } "" "({ MERGEFIELD nick_name })" }
Insert the pairs of field delimiters (the things that look like braces but
can't be typed from the keyboard) using Ctrl+F9.
