Thank you for your answer Suzanne.

Would it were that simple! Unfortunately, the user is not not clicking on
the top 'X' which closes Word, but the bottom 'X' to close the document. For
some reason, the bottom 'X', which should only close the open document, also
closes the application. Maybe I should've made that clearer.

Any other ideas?

For the last open window (only) it matters which X you click. The bottom one
is for the document, the top one for the application. If you use the Close
button on the Standard toolbar, only the document will be closed.

User has Word 2003 and has noticed that when she closes the last file she
has opened, this automatically closes word. She'd like the application to
stay open when she has closed the last currently opened file.

Does anyone know if the behaviour she's noticed is the default and if so

can
it altered?

TIA
