XE fields are Hidden text. You should be able to control them using the
Show/Hide ¶ button (unless "Hidden text" is specifically checked on the View
tab of Tools | Options), but they will reappear when you add another XE
field (in any version) or when you open the file (in Word 2003) if you have
"Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving" checked on the Security
tab of Tools | Options.

sometimes the entries will suddenly appear in the text (in Normal and
