Default Opening an attached document automatically as read-only

Perhaps this is a weak answer, but Word's purpose is creation and editing of
text-- not merely reading it. The current standard of read-only is Adobe.
Consider purchasing Adobe or eqivalent to create "pdf" documents which are
generally read-only formats intended for the purpose of reading only. When
anyone receives such documents, the "reader" software is a free download and
available to anybody with an internet connection. We can't make such
assumptions with Word.

Does anybody know how to have an attached Word document automatically open as
Read-Only when it is clicked on? Every time that i try to send a read-only
doc, the properties erase and it ends up opening without any restrictions. I
know how to save and have the "Open as read-only" box be prompted, but is
there a way to have it automatically open as read only?

Thanks
