Default WORD 2003 INDEXING PROBLEM

Try this:

Tools - Options - Print, remove the check next to Hidden text (under Include
with document). Make sure that Update fields (under Printing options) is
checked.

Tools - Options - View, remove the check next to Hidden text (under
Formatting marks).

If the index entry fields still show after doing that, press Ctrl+Shift+8 to
toggle them off before re-"calculating" the index.

...
In creating an index, Word inserts hidden fields. These cumulate, causing
text to shift downwards. In a long document (e.g. a book), the pagination
which appears in the index is therefore wrong for the later pages.
The on-line Help page merely says ("Create an index" - 3) "to make sure
that
the document is paginated correctly, you need to hide field codes..." But
if
offers no solution.
If entries have to be checked and corrected by hand, the indexing function
seems useless.
Is there an answer?
