Default Gray shading within gray brackets - not highlighting or forms?

Gray shading normally indicates a field. Gray brackets indicate a bookmark.
Neither should print. Both can be disabled on the View tab of Tools |
Options.

In Word 2003, what is the meaning of light gray shading behind text,

enclosed
in light gray brackets? I'm not talking about highlighting or forms or
fields. How do I remove the gray?

Thanks in advance for any help!
