Default Table of Contents - Removing Header Numbers

Jeff,

If you don't want to use TC fields, use one style for the numbering (in the
body of the document) and a different one for the heading text; include only
the latter in the TOC. To make the two headings appear on the same line of
text, format the paragraph mark between them as hidden. See
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RunInSidehead.htm.

However, in this case, if you are trying to exclude only some of the
numbered headings, TC fields might be easier.

In the example you cited, there was a 1 in front of the 2.1.1. It was that
1
that I thought might have come from numbering of the TOC style. Short of
using TC fields, I don't know of any way to use auto numbering for
headings
and omit it from the TOC.

Hi Suzanne - the 2.1.1 is a requirement number that is in the word

document.
The next requirement number could be 2.3.2 but I don't want the default
number in front of the requirement number.

It looks suspiciously as if that TOC style has had numbering applied.

Thanks Stefan and Brian. Unfortunately the article that you referred

me
to
did not answer my question. My TOC looks like the following:

User Acceptance Test Scenario Overview..............4

Alerts............................................ ....................5
1 2.1.1 Search and View Alert History...............6
Comp Title, Items, & Artwork..............................17
Future Title - Title............................................. .35

I would like to remove the "1" in front of the 2.1.1 Search and View

Alert
History. This is a "Heading 1"

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Jeff

In the document, how is the "1 2.1.1 SEARCH AND VIEW ALERT HISTORY"
entry
displayed? If you want to get rid of the initial "1" altogether,

modify
the
numbering of the document. If you want something else, try the tips

in
the
article at http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm
(suggested

by
Brian). Depending on what you are trying to do, separate styles or

TC
fields
would be used in this situation.

Hi There,

Does anyone know how to keep the Heading numbering from appearing

in
the
table for contents. For example...(please see below) I would
like

for
the
"1" to be removed from the third line and just have it state
2.1.1
which
is
part of a sentence in the document. The "1" is associated with
Heading 1.

USER ACCEPTANCE TEST SCENARIO OVERVIEW..................4

ALERTS............................................ ..........................
.......5
1 2.1.1 SEARCH AND VIEW ALERT HISTORY...........6
COMP TITLE, ITEMS, &

ARTWORK.......................................17
