Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd already done this. In any case, the
problem corrected itself magically after I exited Word and restarted.

In your Find dialog, reveal the Advanced settings and check that all of
them
are OFF. Also: be careful of hidden spaces. Spaces do not show in the
Find
dialog but they are significant (they do count...)
