1. Yes Chapter 1 is Level 1. I'm not sure what you're telling me as far as
the styles being numbered 1, 2, and so on though - the 9 levels within the
same Heading 1 Style? If that's what you're talking about, I currently have
them numbered 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.1.1, etc. - do you mean I should change them to
1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.? I've tried this without achieving the desired results.
2. This is one large document containing all Chapters.
I've messed with this thing so much I think I no longer understand what I
thought I did! Is there any way to reset all the Headings to the default
settings so I can start over again? I usually don't have a problem figuring
out the way a software package handles things, but this continues to be quite
the challenge! And, correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to be able to use
my styles in other documents, I have to be sure to check the "Add to
Template" box when I'm through making my changes, correct?
Thanks for your input - I'm not used to having to ask for help as I usually
have no problem figuring it out for myself!

You'll need to do this if you want renumbering to start in each chapter.
Renumbering should occur automatically; the first instance of the Level 1
style should be numbered 1, the next 2, and so on.
Are all the chapters in the same document? If not, you'll have to restart
numbering manually, and this will cause problems when you combine the files
(as you will probably want to do ultimately). It's really much simpler to
deal with a single document from the start, for this reason and others. Word
can handle multiple thousands of pages of text, so it can pretty much take
whatever you throw at it.
