Because Excel doesn't address the printer driver in the same way. Lots of
applications access the printer directly. Word is not one of them.

It doesn't mean that at all. Word interrogates the printer driver to
determine what page settings it can apply. It doesn't matter what you set
in Word, if the current driver configuration does not allow printing to
the edge (and unless you have it set up for printing photographs it
almost certainly will not) then Word will not print to the edge of the
paper.

settings are never used in word only the default printer settings -

The printer setting are set to 'print to edge' and the margins are set
to 0. There are absolutely no problems when printing from Excel with
exactly the same settings. I don't think the printer driver is able to
distinguish between word and excel so th eproblem must be located in
word!

The limits of the print area in Word are set by the printer driver. If
the printer is capable of printing to the edge as you indicate, there
will probably be a setting in the driver (probably relating to
photograph printing) that allows it to do so. This is not something
controlled by Word.
