Default Caption within a style

OK, I've come full circle. What Susan recommended is what I am doing now.
Sorry about the long discourse.

The idea of Insert | Caption is that you insert the caption and type your
table title as part of the caption. You can modify the Caption style to
match the current Table Title style. The fact that you have captions in
different styles is, of course, a problem, but it's probably still
preferable to insert the caption and apply your style to it rather than try
to do it the other way round. That is: use Insert | Reference | Caption to
insert the entire paragraph (label and title), then apply your style to
replace the Caption style.

Hi Shauna,

I think I am using the built in caption style. Isn't that what I get when

I
do InsertReferenceCaptionb? When I apply it to a pre-existing table

title,
it automatically puts in a carrage return, which I ten have to delete.

With respect to the font style, I can edit the style of the caption style

to
better fit the font style I'm using but the captions aren't always used

with
the same font. It sounds like I can't combine these two activities into a
single style, which is what I was trying to do.

Sorry for any confusion. It's sometimes hard to explain what I am trying

to
do as clearly as is needed.

Many thanks,
Linda

Hi LAC

When you use Insert Reference Caption, Word automatically applies

the
Caption style. We could probably give you a better answer to your

questions
if you could tell us why you don't want to use the built-in Caption

style.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Shauna, That makes sense. I use the insert caption to create

the
caption in the first place. What would happen if I made the table

title a
character style. Could I create the caption and then overwrite it

with
the
table title style? I think the caption formatting would be

maintained,
no?
I was just trying to avoid the extra step but I guess I can't.

Also, is there a way to prevent the paragraph return from occurring

with
the
insert caption? Sometimes I have to go back in a document and insert

the
captions, then I have to maneuver out the paragraph return to

reconnect
the
Caption to the Table title.

Hi LAC

The Caption style is a paragraph style. I assume your Table Title

style
is,
too. So conceptually one can't be within the other, because they're

both
the
same kind of thing.

When you do Insert Reference Caption, Word applies the Caption

style.
There's no way to tell Word to use some other style for this purpose.
It's
one of the very good reasons to use Word's built-in styles.

My recommendation would be to use the Caption style (modified to look

the
way you want it). If you can't do that, then it may help to know that

you
can search for text in one style and replace it with another style.

Use
Edit
Replace. Leave the Find What and Replace With boxes empty, and use

the
More Format Style list to identify the style to look for and the
style
to replace it with.

Hope this helps.

I have a style called Table Title and in the table title I always

use
captions to autonumber the Table. Is there a way to include the
Caption
style within the table title style so that I don't have to reapply

the
Table
Title style after I insert the caption?
