Default Word replaces continuous section breaks with next page section bre

Karen S. was telling us:
Karen S. nous racontait que :

Am formatting a two-column article that contains some wide tables.
Would like to switch to one-column format for those tables and
continue two-column text for remainder of page. Tried inserting
continuous breaks before and after tables, but Word changes my second
break from "continuous" to "next page." Why is this happening?

There could be many reasons, the one coming to my mind now being that you
may have two consecutive breaks somewhere.

Try this:

Select he whole document (CTRL-A),
Then, File Page Setup...
Go to the "Layout" tab
In the bottom left corner, make sure that Apply to: is set to Whole document
Finally, at the top, set Section start: to "Continuous"

If that does not work, look at your document in Normal mode ("View" menu)
and make sure that your section breaks are placed in the sequence that is
needed for your purpose.
In fact, why don't you do that first?
