Default link to another document

If you insert a PDF as an object it will shrink to the current margins hence
the deterioration. Set the layout property of the object to something other
than in-line with text and change the size to full size before centreing it
on the page. Note that objects cannot span pages so only the first page of a
multi-page PDF would show.
You cannot print linked items that are not displayed in the document. You
would have to print the linked PDF separately.

I am using Word 2003. When I insert a pdf as an object in my MS Word
document the pdf shows but the quality is bad. But if I can somehow
get the inserted links to print automatically that would be best.

Yes. If the pdf displays within the Word document, it will print out
when the document is printed. I've verified that this works in Word
2007 in Vista. I'm not sure about earlier versions of Word in other
versions of Windows.
