Default Table of Contents period leaders

Unfortunately, there is no way to do this except manually, and you have to
do it after editing is complete and you can unlink the TOC. It requires that
you set an extra tab stop somewhat to the left of the right margin (far
enough to clear the longest page number), then insert an additional tab
character in each TOC entry. The first tab stop (the one before the page
numbers) has the period leader, and the page number tab stop has none. I
reiterate, however, that you can't do this as long as you still need to
update the TOC because every time you update it, the extra tabs will be lost
(unless you work out a way to include them in the document headings and use
the appropriate switch to preserve them in the TOC).

Do you know how to make the period leaders in a TOC end a couple spaces
earlier than normal.

I have a table of contents that has one entry that is more than one
