As Suzanne points out, the features available in Word "may" help you out,
but in order to be certain the work must be done in a graphics program - not
a word processor.
The image needs what is called an image clipping path, which delineates the
pixel content of the image & tells the text-based program to "ignore"
anything outside the path... or more accurately "hides" the peripheral white
pixels from it.

Trying to print a document with a graphic in it, but when printing, a
square white background around the graphic shows glaringly in the
document.
Would like to know how to remove the background and still retain the
graphic.
