Two thoughts to offer in regard to the suggestion - although I understand
your position.

1. Everything else you mention (bold, italic , etc.) are *Character
Formatting* attributes, Highlighter is *not*. It is a proofing tool added
for convenience more than anything else.

2. You can add buttons to any toolbar - including a custom toolbar of your
own design - to apply Styles and/or any other effects you wish (including
Macros to apply multiple actions), but if you do so for every conceivable
combination it will take longer to locate the button you need when you need
it than it would to work within the existing framework of the program - and
your screen would be so cluttered with those *convenient* buttons that you
wouldn't be able to view any of the doc in the first place.
