Default problem with mailmerge word 2003

ok so i've looked over here and have seen several suggestions that i thought
would work but so far i've had no luck.

i have a mail merge document that imports data from excel 2003. everything
seems to work fine except for 2 problems. 1 i can live with but if you can
help me fix it it would be great. the other i need to fix.

the problem i need to fix is the date entry i have on the mail merge
document shows up as ######.### instead of DD/MM/yy hh:mm am/pm. the time
and date are all one field because that is how the program i import that data
into excel stores it. i've tried changing the source coding through options
and i lose the field that contains the email addresses i need to send it to.
when i tried using the (/@) format commands nothing happened. i suspect it
is because the information is derived from a formula on the original
spreadsheet. but am hoping someone has a way i can get this to work.
