Also, identify your version of Word.
Also, be sure "Show Non-Printing Characters" (Ctrl-Shift-8) is turned
on, so that you can see why you have blank space you don't want.
But if you've _ever_ had a footer in a document, you can't make it go
away entirely -- all you can do is delete everything in it, and set
its position (in Page Setup Layout) to 0.
