If you are working in Print Layout View you will see a gray space that
separates one page from the next *if* you are at the top or bottom of a page.
Otherwise what you want to look at on the Status Bar is the info on either
side of the reference to Sec 1. On the left of Sec 1 it literally tells you
'Page 1', 'Page 2', etc. and on the right of Sec 1 it tell you what page you
are viewing of how many pages are in the document (1/1, 1/2, 3/10).

You will always be in Sec 1 until you start to use Section Breaks in your
documents.
