Default Linking An OLE Object

Hi ?B?Vmlja2kgTWFnbmlz?=,

I am trying to link an OLE BITMAP Object in Word. Instead of an image I get
the file name and a small icon. I can not install MS Photo Editor, and I
have tried linking BITMAPS to MS PICTURE and FAX Viewer and Irfanview. It
fixes the problem on some computers but not others. They are all running XP,
Service Pack2 and Office 2003.

Normally, one wouldn't insert a graphics file into a Word document as an OLE
object. I assume you have a good reason for wanting to go this route...

For OLE to function, a program has to be installed on the machine that 1) can
work with the file type, 2) can act as an OLE Server and 3) is registered in
Windows as the "owner" of the file type.

In addition, these days there are problems with third-party applications
interfering with OLE Server execution (anti-virus software, for example).

Since it works on some machines and not on others, the problem isn't with Word
(since Word just consumes what's installed), but with the system configuration.
It's very difficult for an outsider to trouble-shoot anything of this nature,
but I guess I'd start by booting a "problem machine" in Safe Mode to see if that
makes any difference. If it does, you're looking for something that's
interfering with OLE communication in Word/Office.
