I do have Yahoo, but I think this happens even when I'm not connected to the
internet and Yahoo is not up. I have dial up so I'm not usually online when
I'm typing. But I will give this a try. If anyone else has any other ideas,

I experienced this before where my current window (e.g. Word) becomes
inactive and I can't type anything until I click within the window again.
I found it was because my Yahoo Messenger was trying to poll for new
messages but my LAN cable had come undone and so it can't get a connection.
When I shut down my Yahoo application, the problem you described disappeared.
