I noticed something else. The document was shared with a Mac user and these
strange symbols are in a ZWAdobe font with a point size of 1. Converting
everything to Verdana point size of 11 just made them visible.

I am using Word 2003 SP2 and Windows XP Pro SP2. I also am using Endnote
9 (those links seem to be unaffected) and MathType 5.2.

I have all the available updates installed. Maybe that is my problem.
It will be a lot of work if I have to manually replace all the links and
cross-references.
