Default Removing special characters from previous file formats

Have you tried copying one of the squares to the clipboard, then pasting it
into the Find what: field? Even though they look like squares, often, Word
differentiates them nonetheless, and can find them.

I am converting an old collection of recipes from files which were set in
Ventura text format.
Word read the files and converts them to Windows format and displays them
fine but it also adds a lot of extra non-alphanumeric characters and
symbols
which Find and Replace will not recognise such as small squares.

is there any way of getting the replace function to recognise these
characters?
