DDE is no longer the default method of data attachment to a merge document
and so no formatting is brought over - only the underlying data. DDE can
still be used, as you have found, but it is a bit flaky.

From the Pizza button inWord 2007, select Word Options and then go
to the Advanced tab General and check the box against the "Confirm
conversions at open" item. Then when you attach the data source to
the mail merge main document, you will be given the option of using
the DDE method of connection which should read the data as you have
it formatted in the table.
