First, yes macros could do this. Obviously they shouldn't, but it's
certainly possible. Check this forum for any number of posts about how the
latest version of Acrobat prevents saving any changes to your normal
template. Technically, all it takes is to set the document's .Saved property
to TRUE -- Word won't even try saving a document if it thinks it's been
saved already. Or, intercept Word's FileSave command (which is simply a
matter of writing a macro with that name).

That said, there are Word viruses that do this also.

The obvious way to check is to uninstall Goldmine and see if the problem
goes away.
