Default Numbering in Tables--Down then Across

Brian,
Maybe work on a column basis, select the first column and apply numbering,
select the second column apply numbering which should restart at one, then
change the beginning number in the bullets and numbering dialog to start at
11.

Say I have a 2x10 table in Word 2003 (SP3--just realized it got installed
without me noticing!) and I want to number the items in table going from 1
to 10 in the first column and then from 11 to 20 in the second column.
Seems like a simple thing to do and I'm sure I've done this plenty of
times before. Now I get the numbering going across sequentially as
follows.

1 2
3 4
5 6
7 8
etc.

instead of

1 11
2 12
3 13
4 14
etc.

Is this a SP3 bug? Is there a workaround short of typing in the numbers
myself?

Thanks.

Brian
