But LINK fields set to automatically update are still "more automatic" than
other types of fields in Word. For example, using PageDown and PageUp (to
scroll the object out of view and then back into view) should trigger an
update.

Link updating, though automatic, is not dynamic. That is, you need to do
something to cause the links to update. Usually, a Print preview is
sufficient, though you can also select the 'copy' and press F9 to update
it - Ctrl-A, F9 updates all the fields & links in the document.
