automatic page numbering to a merged document
The fields that I suggested should be put in the mailmerge main document,
that is before the merge is executed.

Add it in the normal way to the mailmerge main document, but if you are
wanting Page x of y, replace the { NUMPAGES } field with a {
SECTIONPAGES }
field.
