I don't think the document itself had been courrpted, but only the style. I
know the method you mention however it did not work.
The real trouble is the normal.dot on every company can be different. So
there is no way for me to know what is the correct setting for those
'external style'.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks Stefan - the style report is very useful.
For numbered styles, I used to just specify the indentation as you
suggested
however this one was very strange - other things like tab and
paragraph
settings also affect the whole thing. I spent the whole day
yesterday to fix
on one computer however after I send that to my colleagues it all
messed up
again....maybe this one was special...
Check if the problem style has been set to "Automatically update" in
the Modify Style dialog box. If so, clear the option.
Another possibility is that "Automatically update document styles" is
checked in Tools | Templates and Add-Ins, but this normally wouldn't
cause any trouble (unless you all have differently formatted versions
of the attached template, causing the document to change depending on
who opens it). If the option is checked, you could clear it anyway.
If everything else fails, you could copy and paste all text (except
the final paragraph mark) into a new file, in order to get rid of any
corruption. For more, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/CorruptDoc.htm.

I think that is always a real pain when making changes on other
specified
style and numbering....

2. For numbered styles, specify the indentation via the Customize
Outline Numbered List dialog box; then it should be retained.
1. For a way to delete unused styles, see

Hi all
I work in a legal environment and we always have a lot of
problem on
style
and numbering....
In our office we have a full set of numbering style and it is
very
easy to
use. However, if we need to send the document to our clients to
edit and
then receive back many times the style got corrupted...
This time I got a real problem that spent me 2 days (but not
able to
'FIX'
it yet)....I got a document from our client, which contains more
then 3
companies' style in it already (it had more then 100 styles...).
We
are able
to track down what numbering style it is mainly use so we
followed
that,
however, the indentation are all wrong every time we fixed that
and
save and
re-open!
eg (not exactly but close to this) the correct one:
1 tab Country
indent1.1 tab Area
indentindent (a) tab City
result (after save and re-open)
indent 1 tab Country
indentindentindent1.1tabtab Area
indentindentindentindent (a) tabtab City
Luckily all numbering are correct, only indentations are
wrong...
Q1: Is there a method to remove those unused style?
Q2: What is the best approach to fix this problem???
Thanks a lot!
