Tell your brother to use Windows Find or Search to look for winword.exe
(he'll need to include hidden and system files or folders in the search).
When he finds it, he can create a shortcut to that file and put it on his
desktop or Quick Launch bar.

From the sound of it, he still has Word listed on his Programs menu. Can he
open the program from there?
