Do you have other online applications like Yahoo Messenger, which polls for
new messages every few seconds/ minutes?
I experienced this before where my current window (e.g. Word) becomes
inactive and I can't type anything until I click within the window again.
I found it was because my Yahoo Messenger was trying to poll for new
messages but my LAN cable had come undone and so it can't get a connection.
When I shut down my Yahoo application, the problem you described disappeared.
