I only have Word 2003, but I can make that happen either way (each level or a
selection).

I don't know about selecting/using "Outside Borders;" I would have to use
Borders and Shading.

Select text you want to affect and: Format Borders and Shading [Tab]
Borders
€¢ on the right side of the tab is a dropdown for "Apply to:"

€¢ if the selection is "Text" each line of text will have a border around it
(and the box will end at the end of the text)

€¢ if the selection is "Paragraph" the text will have a border around the
"group" (and the box will end at the right margin

Notes:
€¢ If there are borders around the text or paragraph you may need to remove
them (Format Borders and Shading Apply to: Text [or Paragraph] [click
on] None)--you may need to remove them from both Text and Paragraph
€¢ If your headings are short and you don't want the border to extend over to
the right margin (on just that text) you can drag the right indent over to
where you like or use Format Paragraph to specify Indentation on the Right

I want one border to go around A. i. ii. and B. like a box. What I end up
with is a box around A., another box around i., another box around ii., and
