Sometimes it can result from pasting in text from another source (especially
the Web) and then pressing Enter at the end of the pasted paragraph to get a
new one, which perpetuates the "(no proofing)" format.

I had the same question: why did my spell check stop working? I did a

search
through this newsgroup, found this answer (patting my self on the back)

and
implemented it and it works. Thank you.

But out of curiosity: What happens that makes a document that opened with
the spell checker on and was working, underlining mis-spelled words, all

of
sudden change to not working?

Open a document where this problem occurs. Press Ctrl+A to select all
of the text. Click on Tools | Language | Set Language | choose your
language | uncheck the "Do not check spelling or grammar" and "Detect
language automatically" boxes | Default | OK. Press F7 to rerun
spellcheck.
