Default How to access different glyphs in MS Word?

It's a question about OpenType fonts, which can have hundreds more
glyphs than older fonts, and Word isn't equipped to handle them
(except when a "complex script" is involved, and you can't access the
individual glyphs there, either).

The method of opening character map is very cumbersome. Is there any
shortcut key or menu button or any other similar such method which can
enable typing different glyphs of any character.-
