To add to what Doug has said, when you are editing the numbering of an
existing multilevel list, you should place the insertion point in the first
level 1 paragraph (which in the case of heading numbering means the first
Heading 1 paragraph of the document) before clicking Home tab | Multilevel
List | Define New Multilevel List.

In Word 2007, to get to the dialog referred to in the article, Click on
the pulldown for Multilevel List in the Paragraph section of the Home tab
of the Ribbon and then select Define new multilevel list from the bottom
of the pulldown
If you create a template to hold your numbering scheme, you can use that
template as the basis for new documents (using File New) and the new
documents will then inherit your numbering scheme. To do that, see:

I'm running Word 2007 and use to know how to change the style in 2003 by
modifying each Heading's style by formatting the Numbering, but
multilevel
numbering is more difficult to manipulate in 2007.
