Insert a field --

{ eq \o(x,¯) }

Use Ctrl-F9 to create the field, not the curly brackets on the keyboard.
Change the x to y (or whatever) as needed. The overscore character is
Alt-0175 or use Insert Symbol Normal text. Having created this field
once, you can make it an autotext entry if you use it a lot.

How can characters like x bar (i.e., an "x" with a "-" over the top) be
typed
in WORD? Such figures are commonly used to represent averages, etc., and
I
frequently need them in my work. WORD, of course, handles underline,
strike-through, and italics, but not this.
