In Word 2007, there's the opposite problem. The ribbon tabs have, IMO,
largely unintuitive shortcuts and no underlines. You have to tap the Alt
key to get them to show up at all. I guess some fussy program thought they
were ugly or cluttered. A continuing problem for many GUIs is that
programmers don't seem to grasp that not everyone is in love with pointing
devices.

Back to Word 2003... I'm not sure why Suzanne got a beep. I don't get a
beep and can remove/change the hot key designators at will. When I remove
the & from File, Alt+F no longer works -- as expected. I have remapped a
number of hot keys, particularly in Outlook, so that I can use shortcuts
to access items I add to the different toolbars.

You maybe right, but why would anyone get upset with one of the letters
being underlined (unless they did not know what it was for).

If I was the worrying kind, there would be a lot more to worry about
before that bugged me.

Are you sure, Doug? With Tools | Customize open, I right-clicked on
File, deleted the ampersand from &File, and clicked out of the menu. I
got a funny sort of beep, but File did appear with the F not underlined.
Since I immediately restored the ampersand before closing the Customize
dialog, I can't guarantee that it would actually work, however.

The underlining indicates that the key corresponding to the underlined
letter can be used in conjuction with the Alt key as a keyboard
shortcut to invoking the menu item.

They cannot be removed from the built-in menus.
