Default Table style - How to use "Update to match selection"?

I'm working with Word 2003 on Windows XP Professional SP2

I have a feeling what I want to do is not possible since no one has answered
my initial post. I'm trying to use an existing, formatted table to create a
new custom table style. Here's what I've done and where I'm at now...

* I first tried using "New Style..." under Styles and Formatting to create a
custom table style and failed miserably.

* So, I insterted a table (FileTableInsert), created table heading and
table cell paragraph formats for it. Then, I used Table Properties to format
the borders, etc. exactly the way I wanted it.

* I created a style, Table1, to use.

* I selected the properly formatted table and tried to apply "Update to
match selection" under my Table1 style. However, the command is grayed out
and I can't figure out how to make it work.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.
